Tonight I was watching a portion of a focus group from Iowa. The question directed to the group was: "How many of you believe that the president is a Muslim?". Nearly half of the group raised their hands. That was about 12 out of 25 people in the group. And then a few more people who had not initially raised their hands chimed in to assure the moderator that they, too, were not sure of the president's religious beliefs. I don't know who was directing this group or anything about the make-up of the group regarding their political affiliations, but I suspect they were Republicans. Frankly, I was stunned, but I probably shouldn't be. When Barak Obama was running for president I had a conversation with my niece and she was firm in her belief that if Obama became president he would try to convert the entire country to Islam. At the time I think I was so shocked that I could barely answer her. And now I realize that she is not alone. A great many people in our country feel the same way. I really believe that most of these people use the word Muslim so as not to say what they really feel which is they can't fully accept the fact that a black man is now head of our country. How did this happen? They could have had John McCain, a homophobe, and his running mate, Sarah Palin, an idiot. To complete this scary scenario I recently read that Sarah Palin's daughter has said she would also be available to run if the country needed her. I haven't heard lately that we need high school dropouts in the white house, but who knows what will happen in the future.
