Egypt has been much in the news and much on everyone's mind these past couple of weeks. We are very glad that we got to see Egypt before it erupted, but I am not surprised to hear about what is happening there. Our guides made it as clear as they could to us that they were free to talk about politics, but not "too free". I think that all the protests have been in the large cities and not anywhere else in the country. The farmers are too poor to stop plowing and start protesting. One day away from their fields might mean that one less child gets fed. With Ben's help I am going to post my journal from Egypt on this site so anyone who is interested may share my memories of the country. I tried to make it clear that once you leave Cairo you feel as if you have traveled 5,000 years into the past. While traveling on the Nile in our riverboat I would not have been surprised to see the Pharaoh floating past on his barge.
Ben and I watched the Super Bowl last night and we ate home-made pizza. I have been watching football with Ben for an unknown number of years and still have no idea what is going on. I see 22 people in colorful costumes on a large field trying to inflict as much damage on each other as they possibly can without getting caught. The game last night was replete with "stars" singing the National Anthem incorrectly and a half time show consisting of some strange people singing strange songs surrounded by hundreds of swaying bodies bedecked in lights. I think the star of that particular show was wearing a plastic hat, but I won't swear to that. It was bizarre. I truly don't understand this new world of entertainment.
